Activated clays were obtained by modifying natural aluminosilicate clays and are widely used in various adsorption processes, such as: processing of mineral base oils, bleaching of edible vegetable oils, in environmental protection, etc. Adsorption power of these clays depends on the composition, physicochemical, textural and morphological properties of the same. This paper presents comparative analysis of the composition and physicochemical characteristics of natural and sulfuric acid modified bentonite and commercial active clay used in the processing of mineral base oils. The composition of the mentioned clays was determined by applying a series of analytical methods such as: gravimetry, volumetry, AAS, UV-VIS, ICP-OES and XRF. The obtained results confirmed that the adsorption characteristics of bentonite and activated clays depend on their composition and physicochemical characteristics of the same, as well as acid modified bentonite can be used as an alternative to active clays to the above-mentioned adsorption processes.
